Il est certes le (très bon) Dj de Nekfeu mais il est aussi un artiste couteau-suisse qui dévoile son projet « BLACK BIRD » ce 24 mai 2019, entouré d’une partie de ses amis (Di-meh, PLK, Doums, Georgio, Tengo John, Tortoz, Changerz, 2zer…) : Dj Elite nous a reçu à domicile le temps d’une interview. // He is certainly the (very good) DJ of Nekfeu but he is also a Swiss knife artist who unveils his record « BLACK BIRD » on May 24, 2019, surrounded by some of his friends : Dj Elite received us at home for an interview.
OFIVE : Pourquoi cette volonté de sortir un projet collectif où tu produis des sons pour tes potes ? // Why this willingness to release a collective record where you produce songs for your friends ?
DJ Elite : L’idée est venue toute seule. On parle d’artistes avec lesquels j’ai l’habitude de travailler, du coup j’avais déjà pas mal de morceaux de côté qui n’allaient pas forcément sortir, et j’ai eu l’idée d’en faire un projet. Evidemment, ça ne s’est pas fait avec ces morceaux là car tout ce qui est à la poubelle doit rester à la poubelle, mais l’idée du projet est restée. J’ai bossé dessus pendant trois ans, sans être pressé de le finir. Dès qu’on avait du temps avec les artistes, après leur session d’enregistrement pour leurs projets perso, on enregistrait pour ce projet « BLACK BIRD ». // The idea came all by itself. We’re talking about artists with whom I’m used to work so I already had a lot of songs on the side that weren’t necessarily going to release and I had the idea to make it a record. Obviously, it wasn’t done with these songs because everything in the trash has to stay in the trash, but the idea of the joint record remained. I worked on it for three years, without being in a hurry to finish it. As soon as we had time with the artists, after their recording session for their personal records, we recorded for this « BLACK BIRD » project.
OFIVE : Comment as-tu travaillé les instrus ? En t’inspirant de l’univers d’un artiste pour créer une prod qui lui correspond ou dans le sens inverse ? // How did you work on the instrumentals ? By drawing inspiration from an artist’s universe to create an instrumental that suits him or in the opposite direction ?
Dj Elite : Chaque son a été construit différemment. Certaines prods sont venues toutes seules, d’autres ont été composées après avoir vu les paroles. Par exemple Changerz, j’ai déjà réalisé leur premier EP donc j’ai continué à créer dans le même univers. En réalité, je n’ai pas de schéma particulier. PLK par exemple, il a eu le choix entre 5 prods et il a pris sa préférée. Chaque son est unique avec son histoire particulière. // Each song has been built differently. Some of the instrumentals came on their own, others were composed after seeing the lyrics. For example for Changerz, I already made their first EP so I kept creating in the same universe. Actually, I don’t have a particular pattern. PLK for example, he had the choice between 5 instrumentals and he took his favorite. Each song is unique with its own story.
OFIVE : Côté visuels, pourquoi ce choix de la thématique du supermarché et des affiches vintage ? // On the visual side, why this choice of supermarket theme and vintage posters ?
Dj Elite : Je trouve ça cool et ça me fait marrer. Au début, ça part d’une idée qu’on a eu avec mon graphiste (Nathaniel , un génie) pour la cover, je voulais m’inspirer du délire des Beatles et de leur pochette pour l’album « Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band ». Puis Nathaniel m’a apporté les personnages dans leur entièreté en s’inspirant d’anciennes publicités. De là, on a filmé le teaser en réunissant tous les artistes et leurs produits dans un supermarché. On retrouvera ce délire dans les clips d’ailleurs. // I think it’s cool and it makes me laugh. At first, it was based on an idea we had with my graphic designer (Nathaniel, a genius) for the cover, I was inspired by the Beatles’s aesthetic and their cover for the album « Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band ». Then Nathaniel brought me the characters in their entirety, inspired by old advertisements. From there, we filmed the teaser by bringing together all the artists and their products in a supermarket. We’ll find this atmosphere in the music videos by the way.
OFIVE : Qui manque à l’appel dans ce projet ? // Who is missing from this record ?
Dj Elite : Plein d’artistes manquent à l’appel, plus d’une vingtaine parmi les contacts avec qui j’aime bosser. On verra plus tard, 14 titres c’est déjà pas mal. // Many artists are missing, more than twenty of the contacts I like to work with. We’ll see later, 14 tracks is not bad enough.
OFIVE : Une tournée de prévue pour ce projet ? // A tour is planned for this record ?
Dj Elite : Pas du tout. C’est beaucoup trop compliqué niveau organisation. En revanche, je tourne toujours avec Nekfeu sur ses dates à venir, festivals et autres. Doums sera aussi sur scène pour faire notre son « Notting Hill » par exemple. Chaque artiste pourra aussi, s’il le souhaite, présenter son morceau du projet « BLACK BIRD » pendant sa tournée perso. // Not at all. It’s far too complicated in terms of organization. On the other hand, I still tour with Nekfeu on his upcoming dates, festivals and others. Doums will also be on stage to make our « Notting Hill » song for example. Each artist will also be able, if he/she wishes, to present his/her song from the « BLACK BIRD » record during his/her tour.
OFIVE : Le clip de tes rêves ? // The video of your dreams ?
Dj Elite : J’en rêve encore de ce clip… C’est une folie, un truc conceptuel mais je préfère garder mon secret. // I still dream about this video…. It’s crazy, it’s a conceptual thing, but I prefer to keep my secret.
OFIVE : Ta plus grosse fierté ? // Your biggest pride ?
Dj Elite : D’être toujours entouré de mes gars. La fierté de ma mère aussi, c’est ma fierté. // To always be surrounded by my guys. My mother’s pride is my pride too.
OFIVE : C’est une coincidence si les projets de Tortoz, 2zer ou encore Nekfeu sortent à peu près à la même période que le tien ? // Is it a coincidence that the records of Tortoz, 2zer or Nekfeu come out around the same time as yours ?
Dj Elite : Quand c’est l’heure, c’est l’heure… Chacun s’est un peu reposé (obligatoire après l’énorme tournée), a travaillé de son côté et là c’est reparti, c’est le moment ! // When it’s time, it’s time… Everyone rested a little (mandatory after the huge tour), worked on their own and here we go again, it’s time !
OFIVE : Tu as maintenant carte blanche pour booster un artiste ! // You now have carte blanche to boost an artist !
Dj Elite : Je booste Ormaz à fond ! Il vient du Panama Bende, est actuellement sur scène avec PLK et on prépare son projet en ce moment. Il va être incroyable, il est arrivé à maturité. // I’m boosting Ormaz to the max ! He comes from Panama Bende, is currently on stage with PLK and we’re working on his debut record right now. He’s going to be amazing, he’s grown up.
OFIVE : Il te manque quoi dans ton studio ? // What are you missing in your studio ?
Dj Elite : Rien à part des fenêtres… Un peu de lumière du jour ça ne me dérangerait pas. // Nothing but windows… A little daylight wouldn’t bother me.
OFIVE : Ton festival préféré ? Un festival que tu aimerais faire ? // Your favorite festival ? A festival you’d like to do ?
Dj Elite : J’adore Dour, les gens sont trop chauds là-bas, les belges sont kiffants, vraie ambiance. J’aimerais bien me produire au Canada, à Montréal aussi. // I love Dour, the people are too cool there, the Belgians are great, real atmosphere. I would like to perform in Canada, in Montreal too.
OFIVE : L’effet Nekfeu ça t’amuses ? // Do you make fun of the Nekfeu effect ?
Dj Elite : Je reçois des lettres d’amour, des colis pour Nekfeu… Certains viennent même nous voir en concert et me parlent ensuite comme si j’étais un rappeur alors que je sors littéralement de scène où j’ai juste mixé… En revanche, ceux qui me (re)connaissent sont là depuis le début et c’est eux les vrais ! // I receive love letters, parcels for Nekfeu…. Some even come to see us in concert and then talk to me as if I were a rapper when I literally leave the stage where I just mixed… On the other hand, those who (re)know me have been there from the beginning and they are the real ones !
OFIVE : Au final, avec le gros cercle d’amis/artistes influents qui t’entourent, penses-tu vraiment avoir besoin de promo médiatique ? // In the end, with the big circle of influential friends/artists around you, do you really think you need media promotion ?
Dj Elite : Bonne question… Oui et non. C’est cool si des gens découvrent le projet grâce aux interviews, parce qu’ils aiment tel ou tel artiste ou parce que c’est en relation avec Nekfeu. Mais c’est plutôt cool la promo, je rencontre des gens, je m’éclate en faisant un teaser… // Good question…. Yes and no. It’s cool if people discover the record through interviews, because they like this or that artist or because it’s related to Nekfeu. But it’s pretty cool the promotion, I meet people, I have fun doing a teaser…
